The undervalued one: 24 frames a second, a real manual aperture, and no obsolete battery to hunt for.
Where it sits
In 1971 Canon was running two amateur cine lines at once, Kodak's Super 8 and Fuji's Single-8, and the 518 SV is the clearest evidence of it. Canon built a Single-8 518 SV and a Super 8 Auto Zoom 518 SV at the same time, sharing a name and a 9.5 to 47.5mm f/1.8 lens but not a film path. They are different cameras. The Single-8 one has a variable shutter and power rewind; this one has neither. Listings mix them up constantly.
This is the Super 8 one, marketed March 1971 at 45,000 yen. Canon's own account of it is a list of improvements over the 1967 Auto Zoom 518: a more powerful servo meter, a new optical design, drop-in loading and a fixed grip.
What makes it quietly important now is the battery. The 1967 Auto Zoom 518 and the original 814 both need two 1.3 volt mercury cells for the meter, and those have not been made for decades. The 518 SV runs everything — drive, zoom and meter — off four AA cells. It was a convenience in 1971. It is the difference between a working camera and a project in 2026.
There is one detail on this camera that is worth knowing simply because it is good: the slot on the top plate that cancels the orange filter is not really a filter switch. It is the socket a period movie light plugged into. Plug in a lamp and the camera reasons that you are in tungsten light and pulls the filter out by itself. The little plastic key most cameras have lost is only a stand-in for a lamp that is not there — which also explains why so many are missing. It was never attached to anything.
What it is good for
A first serious Super 8 camera, with no battery project standing between you and the first cartridge.
Sync-speed work. It has 24 frames a second, which the 310XL and 514XL do not.
Manual exposure as a routine tool rather than a hidden override. The aperture ring is the main control on this camera, and you set it against a scale you can see in the finder.
Fades, done on the aperture. Canon's manual gives the technique: a tripod, one to one and a half seconds for a quick change, two to three for a slow one, and a neutral density filter over the lens in bright light so there is somewhere to travel between working aperture and fully closed.
A wide film speed ladder — seven steps up to ISO 400 tungsten, against the three positions of the 310XL and 514XL.
Where it falls short: no macro at all, minimum focus 1.2 metres. No variable shutter, so no dissolves. Five-times zoom at f/1.8, two thirds of a stop slower than the 814 and the same two thirds behind the f/1.4 XL bodies — only the f/1.0 310XL is further ahead, by about one and two-thirds stops. A 160 degree shutter, which is a normal shutter and not a low-light one, so it is at a real disadvantage indoors. Single frames need a cable release. And slow motion costs you a stop the meter does not give back — Canon's manual tells you to open up one stop yourself when you switch to it.
What to check before you buy one
Ask whether the filter key is included
Expect the answer to be no. Most surviving cameras have lost it. It is not fatal — a piece of plastic cut to shape, roughly 18 by 20 millimetres, does the same job — but it should be reflected in the price.
All three speeds
Four fresh alkaline AAs, then run it at 18, at 24 and in slow motion. The note should change cleanly at each and the camera must stop the moment you let go of the trigger.
The aperture ring
Set it to A for automatic, then pull it up and turn it counter-clockwise for manual, and watch the needle and the f/stop scale in the finder.
The meter against a handheld one
Point at an evenly lit surface and compare what the needle says against a meter set to the same film speed and frame rate.
The grip and battery contacts
Corrosion. This is where a dead 518 SV usually starts.
The lens
A torch through it from the front, and again from the back through the open cartridge door.
The transport
The pulldown claw, watched through the open door while the camera runs. It should move regularly, not hesitantly. And the cartridge drive wheel in the chamber: it should turn smoothly.
What goes wrong, and what fixes it
Before you blame the camera: the batteries
Most cameras sent for repair are not broken. Put a fresh set in before you conclude anything, and do it before you test any other fault on this page, because tired cells imitate half of them.
Use ordinary alkaline cells, not rechargeables. Not because rechargeables damage anything — they do not, and one or two makers supplied their own rechargeable packs — but because of three things that all read as a broken camera. A nickel-metal-hydride cell is 1.2 volts against an alkaline's 1.5, so six of them give 7.2 volts where the camera expects 9. A battery check built for alkalines reads that as flat. A meter calibrated at 1.5 volts reads the light wrong at 1.2. And ordinary rechargeables lose ten to fifteen per cent of their charge every month sitting in a drawer, so a camera used three times a year is dead every time you pick it up, where alkalines lose two or three per cent in a year.
If you want rechargeables anyway, use low-self-discharge cells, charge them the week you shoot, and trust the battery check less.
Never mix old and new cells, or two chemistries, in one camera. And take them out when you put the camera away: a leaking cell is the commonest way a working camera becomes a dead one.
Before you blame the camera: the film
Cartridges do jam, and it is not always the camera. Shooters have reported cartridges that would not advance in one body and ran perfectly in another, and the same fault following the cartridge rather than the camera across different models.
The test takes ten seconds and settles it. Take the cartridge out, mark the film through the front window with a permanent pen, put it back, run the camera two or three seconds, and take it out again. If the mark has gone, the film moved. Three separate labs give that same test.
Then swap. Try a different cartridge in the same camera, or the same cartridge in a different camera. One bad roll points at the cartridge. Three bad rolls point at the camera.
Things that mislead people: the footage counter can move while the film does not, so it proves nothing on its own. And check each roll reads EXPOSED at the end before you send it off.
If it jams, do not open the cartridge. You cannot inspect it without fogging the film, and you destroy both the footage and the evidence. Send it to the lab anyway — they open it in darkness and can often recover what was shot. Kodak runs a feedback form for cartridges, and some sellers will replace a jammed one.
One popular explanation is worth correcting: the story that Vision3 stocks jam because their base is thicker, being designed for 16mm and 35mm. Kodak's own data describes the 35mm and Super 8 versions of a stock identically and publishes no base thickness at all. The only documented difference is between negative and reversal film, and the lab that documents it says the thicker negative helps rather than hurts. The jams that are documented were on reversal stock.
Corrosion in the grip
At the battery contacts or at the brass pin where the grip meets the body. This is the commonest reason one of these is dead. Light oxidation cleans off at home with a contact cleaner and a fibreglass pen. A pin corroded through, or a broken lead inside the grip, needs soldering inside a dismantled grip — technician.
The missing filter cancellation key
A sourcing problem rather than a repair, and a piece of shaped plastic solves it. A filter that will not move at all is different: that is a strip-down. Sticking 85 filters are a common Super 8 complaint of this period generally, though we have no failure data for this model in particular.
A motor that is gummed, seized, or keeps running
Running the camera for a while sometimes frees old grease. Past that it is degrease and relubricate on a bench. The Canon repair literature is blunt about the alternative: do not attempt to lubricate the cogs. That warning exists because owners make it worse.
A seized or jamming zoom motor
A jammed cog, a shaft wanting lubrication, or a dead motor. Technician.
Weak take-up torque
Film pulled through the gate but not wound in. An adjustment, not a part. Technician.
Perished light seals
Home fix, an evening, self-adhesive foam.
An exposure meter out of calibration
Expect it on an unserviced camera. Recalibration is bench work, but this camera gives you a genuine alternative: put the ring on manual and use a handheld meter.
One thing in its favour — it has no mercury meter cell, so it does not suffer the 1.35 against 1.5 volt error that afflicts the original 814 and the 1967 Auto Zoom 518.
Haze or fungus in the lens
Cleaning means dismantling the front group, and alcohol-based cleaners will take the coatings off. Fungus that has etched the glass cannot be cleaned at all. And a zoom reassembled without recollimation will not hold focus across its range. Technician.
A jammed cartridge door
Ease it with the tip of a thin blade, gently, or push the hook back with a screwdriver until the latch engages. Home fix.
