Super 8 cameras, and the decade that made them

Super 8 arrived in 1965: a cartridge you drop in, no threading, and a notch in the cartridge that tells the camera how sensitive the film is. Most of the cameras here are from the seventies, when Canon, Nizo, Bauer, Nikon and others competed on zoom range, slow motion and sound.

Each listing names the speeds, the zoom range and whether the camera records sound, and says how it looks and how it works.

Is Super 8 film still made?

Yes. Kodak still makes Super 8 cartridges in colour and black and white, and several labs in Europe develop and scan them.

My Super 8 camera seems dead. Is it broken?

Usually not. Tired batteries, corroded contacts and a cartridge the meter cannot read look exactly like a broken camera. How to rule each one out: Super 8: before you blame the camera.

Which Super 8 cameras are written up?

The Canon 514XL, Canon 814XL-S, Canon 1014XL-S, Braun Nizo 801 and others, each with its common faults and what fixes them.
