35mm film cameras: SLRs, rangefinders and compacts
35mm is the film most people mean when they say film, and it is still made, sold and developed everywhere. The cameras here run from mechanical SLRs of the sixties and seventies to the autofocus compacts of the nineties.
Each listing names the shutter, the meter, the battery and the lens mount, and says how the camera looks and how it works.
Which 35mm camera should I buy first?
A mechanical SLR if you want to learn exposure, a compact if you want it with you, an automatic SLR if you want the picture more than the process. The reasoning is in Which 35mm camera should you buy.
Does it need a battery?
Depends on the camera. A mechanical body only needs one for the meter; a Canon AE-1 needs its 6-volt cell for everything. Every listing names the battery and says whether it is still made.
Which models are written up?
Among others the Canon AE-1, Minolta X-700, Contax T2, Olympus mju-II, Ricoh GR1 and Yashica T4. All of them: the models.
